– Our Story
In November of 1918 Rev. John J. Jakaitis, energetic pastor of St. Casimir Church in Worcester (now closed) established and wrote the Constitution for the Lithuanian Charitable Society, which is the foundation of what came to be known as Maironis, named after Lithuanian patriot and poet laureate, Maironis. In 1923, Fr. Jakaitis organized a committee of individuals that purchased the Bigelow Estate on Lake Quinsigamond in Shrewsbury. This purpose was to allow the local Lithuanian community to hold a variety of events that included picnics and other social events. Maironis opened its doors on May 30, 1924 and has been a good neighbor in Shrewsbury since that time for these many years. In 1954 the rebuilding of the clubhouse began and was completed in 1962. Fourteen years later the clubhouse was then enlarged and welcomed many people from near and far to use the spacious facilities. Yet, on December 24,1973 tragedy struck Maironis and a fire destroyed the clubhouse and everything inside. Many memories went up in flames. However, the members remained undeterred. At a special meeting early in 1974, the members voted to rebuild a facility with all the amenities and in Spring, 1974 construction began. On December 8, 1974, the current Maironis facility was opened.
To many, Maironis is a function hall, a place to have a party… a place to share a few drinks. However, to the Worcester Lithuanian Community it has been and continues to be although to a lesser scale these days the Cultural Center of New England.
Historically the site of the Atlantic Regional Lithuanian Boy and Girl Scout Sport Festival for many years drawing hundreds of young people together for that weekend in June, Maironis continues to be the host site annually for the New England District Knights of Lithuania Cultural Festival, the Lithuanian Boy and Girl Scouts’ Annual Spring Festival – Kaziuko Muge is the site for many organizations’ annual concerts, events and commemorations. Though to some, small in number, the local Lithuanian community is vibrant, enjoys getting together and strives to add to the cultural scene of the area. Of note is that in recent years with the wave of new immigrants coming from Lithuania, settling in the Worcester area and starting to raise families, an initiative and response to a need resulted in the establishment of a Lithuanian Language school that meets on Saturdays in Maironis in a separate room provided by the organization at no cost to the school.
Meetings are during the regular school year and youngsters of Lithuanian Ancestry can become more proficient in the Lithuanian language and learn about a culture and history steeped in tradition. This brought in a wave of new blood to the organization and gives us the hope and drive to continue in the traditions started by our founders in 1918.
